We do not believe that a home needs to follow a single trend, have every piece from the same collection, or look as if it came out of a perfect photograph.

It all began in 1986
Gato Preto’s story begins in Lisbon, in 1986, founded by Marina and Mário Tendeiro.
In November of that year, the first small store opened on Avenida da Liberdade, at Libersil. It was just 15 m².
The initial idea was to showcase traditions, objects, and crafts made in Portugal.
It was a small space. But the desire to find pieces with character was already there.
The following year, in 1987, the Amoreiras store opened. “Store 01” already had a name that would become part of several generations’ collective imagination: A Loja do Gato Preto.
What began in a small space in Lisbon grew, evolved, and gradually found its way into thousands of homes.
And some of the pieces that entered those homes never left.
40 years of entering Portuguese homes
Four decades cannot fit into a timeline.
There are stores, collections, changes in identity, collaborations, objects that unexpectedly became iconic, and many moments that are part of Gato Preto’s history.
But some help tell the story.
