How to decorate your home office

Como decorar o escritório em casa - Gato Preto

Decorating a home office does not mean sacrificing organisation for aesthetics, or vice versa. The best home offices are spaces where every object has a reason to be there: it works well and contributes to the atmosphere. In this article, we explain how to balance decoration and productivity, from furniture to small details, without losing sight of what really matters: working well.

There is a widespread belief that a beautiful office is necessarily a less functional office, full of decorative objects, overloaded surfaces, and storage sacrificed for aesthetics. The opposite belief also exists: that a functional office must be neutral, impersonal, almost clinical.

Neither is true. A workspace where you enjoy being is a space where you work better. The key is simple: choose pieces that do both things at once, that organise and decorate, that are beautiful and useful, that define the atmosphere without cluttering it.

The principle: functionality first, decoration second

The order of priorities in a home office is always this: first define what the space needs to do—work, store, meet, create. Only then define how it will look.

This does not mean that aesthetics are secondary. It means that decoration should grow out of functional needs, not the other way around. A shelving unit that solves a storage problem while also being beautiful is a better choice than an unattractive shelving unit that only solves the storage problem, or a decorative object that solves nothing.

Practical rule: for every object that enters the office, the question is “what does this do?” not just “what does this look like?”. If the answer is purely aesthetic, consider whether the space really needs that object or whether it will merely add visual noise.

The office colour palette

Colour affects mental states in documented ways. In the context of a home office, the choice of palette has practical consequences.

Neutral tones (beige, sand, light grey, warm white): create a calm backdrop that does not compete with your work. Easy to combine with any furniture collection. The safest foundation for a home office.

🟢 Green (sage, forest, olive): associated with calm and focus. It works very well as an accent color—a wall, a chair, or a lamp. It does not visually overwhelm the space.

🟤 Wood and terracotta tones: warm up the space without making it feel busy. They pair well with matte black and gold metal. They make the office feel less like an "office" and more like a lived-in space.

Black and graphite: used sparingly (furniture, lamps, frames), they anchor the space and give it weight and character. In excess, they make the room oppressive.

The rule of 60-30-10 works well in an office: 60% dominant color (the background, walls, and floor), 30% secondary color (main furniture), 10% accent color (accessories, lamps, and decorative details).

Furniture that organizes and decorates

Office furniture is where the functional-decorative equation is felt most strongly. A display cabinet with glass doors shows what is inside and hides what should not be seen. A rattan bookcase brings texture and warmth to a space that would otherwise be just a workplace. A well-designed cabinet solves storage needs and defines the visual character of the wall it stands against.

The reading corner: comfort as part of the office

A functional home office is more than just a desk and chair. People who work from home spend hours in the same space, and having a different corner where they can read, think, or take a break changes their relationship with that space.

A well-positioned armchair, near a window or floor lamp, creates a second zone in the office: less formal and more contemplative. It does not take up much space and makes a real difference to well-being throughout the day.

Plants in the office: why and how

Plants are among the decorative elements with the greatest impact in an office, while requiring minimal maintenance when chosen carefully. There are practical reasons to have them: they improve air quality, introduce an organic texture that contrasts with the hard surfaces of the desk and screen, and have a documented stress-reducing effect.

Which plants are best suited to a home office

  • Pothos: practically indestructible, grows in low light, and is ideal for high shelves or dark corners.
  • Sansevieria (snake plant): hardy, upright, and requires minimal watering. It does not need much natural light.
  • Ficus lyrata (fiddle-leaf fig): a strong visual presence, ideal for corners with good light. It requires consistent watering but is worth it.
  • Succulents: small, easy to care for, and perfect for the desk without taking up space.
  • Cacti: zero maintenance, with a discreet yet distinctive visual presence.

💡 Placement tip: a large plant in the corner of the room visually anchors the space and creates depth. A small plant on the desk, in a designer pot, adds a touch of colour and texture without taking up workspace.

The details that make the difference

In an office, details are the objects that remain permanently on display—on the bookcase, desk, or wall. There are few of them, but they are what define the character of the space.

Decorative boxes: organization with soul

A well-designed box does two things: it stores what should stay out of sight and contributes to the look of a bookcase or desk. The VILLAGE Book Boxes from Gato Preto are a good example of this dual function: the book-shaped design deceives the eye, the contents disappear, and the collection’s illustrated detail adds personality to the shelf.

What works best as a finishing touch in an office

  • One or two frames with photographs or prints personalize the space without overwhelming it.
  • An analog clock on the wall or desk, functional and visually appealing at the same time.
  • A textured object, such as a ceramic piece, small sculpture or wooden box, introduces materiality into a space dominated by metal and plastic.
  • A small mirror, if space is limited, increases the sense of spaciousness and reflects natural light.

Accessories with design: stationery and protection

The objects used every day—the notebook, laptop sleeve and other items—appear and disappear dozens of times a day. When thoughtfully designed, they contribute to the look of the space instead of clashing with it.

Gato Preto's Summer Shades collection brings tropical patterns inspired by California and Sri Lanka to notebooks and neoprene accessories—pieces with personality that fit into an office without making it feel too serious.
